NaYeon (NY) Yang, Ph.D. (she/her), is Assistant Professor of Counseling Psychology in the Department of Psychology
at the University of North Texas. Dr. Yang directs the Grief, Loss, and Trauma Lab

Dr. Yang earned her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Maryland,
College Park, and completed her American Psychological Association (APA)-accredited
Doctoral Internship in Health Service Psychology at the University of Maryland Counseling
Center. Prior to her doctoral education, she earned her M.Ed. in Counseling from Korea
University and her B.A. in Psychology and Asian Languages and Literatures from the
University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.
Dr. Yang’s research broadly focuses on (a) grief, loss, and trauma, (b) career development,
and (c) multiculturalism and social justice issues. Particularly in the areas of grief,
loss, and trauma, Dr. Yang is committed to advancing the understanding of how individuals
navigate the complex experiences of grief, loss, and trauma, and how to better support
them. Through her research, she aims to explore protective and risk factors for individuals
facing these challenges, while examining the important roles that intersecting identities
and culture play in shaping these experiences. Across these research areas, she places
a strong emphasis on multicultural and cross-cultural research, as well as the well-being
of minoritized individuals. As a scientist-practitioner committed to social justice,
Dr. Yang seeks to advance clinical practice by conducting research informed by theories
