Drs. Rogers and Sewell Publish Measure

The National Science Foundation (NSF) wants research to go beyond intellectual merit and have broader implications to academic disciplines and society. Based on NSF grants to Regents Professor Richard Rogers, from 2004 to 2011, his team developed standardized measures for the assessment of Miranda-relevant abilities. PAR, Inc., a leading test publisher has just published the Standardized Assessments of Miranda Abilities (SAMA), which includes a book-length professional manual. It involved 6 years of research and data on more the 700 pretrial defendants. It is our hope that it will have a positive effect on Miranda determinations in particular, and procedural justice, more generally. The UNT community knows the first two authors, Dr. Richard Rogers (Regents Professor) and Dr. Kenneth Sewell (Associate Vice President for Research) as long-time faculty members. As an introduction to the other two authors, Eric Drogin is on the faculty at Harvard Medical School and a valued collaborator on the Miranda studies. In addition, we are very proud of Chelsea Fiduccia, a doctoral candidate in clinical psychology. Chelsea started in an ancillary role and performed so impressively that she earned a co-authorship.
